Another joint project with the North East Dementia Alliance sees us working to develop a participation and involvement programme for people diagnosed with dementia. As far as we are aware, this will be the country's first participation programme for people with dementia and their carers, using personal leadership development techniques and principles. Still in the early stages of development, we will keep you updated through this website and our newsletter as the project progresses.
June 2013
We are working with the North East Dementia Alliance, people with dementia and their carers, and mental health service providers, to develop a toolkit to help employers assess for attitude when recruiting staff to work with people with dementia, especially in terms of 'values based recruitment'. An expert reference group was held on 26th June to identify current evidence-based best practice in the field of attitudinal assessment tools for recruitment.
The end product of this project will include a range of tools to test out values including empathy and understanding and examples of methods of recruitment. Ultimately we are aiming to ensure better quality of care for those experiencing dementia, to reduce staff turnover and reduce recruitment costs for employers.
February 2013
We are beginning two pieces of work with the North East Dementia Alliance to improve the lives of people living with dementia:
- A recruitment tool for assessing attitude in working with people with dementia
- An involvement/participation programme for people with dementia.
We will include updates on this work in future editions of our newsletter.
We are also now working with the Regional Youth Work Unit North East, Young Minds, and Change Ur Mind - the regional youth board - to develop a leadership programme for young people. This work is being led by the Regional Youth Work Unit who will be working with young people and experts in the field of leadership to develop this exciting and innovative new proramme.

We are working with NHS North of Tyne to prepare for the commissioning of mental health service delivery through Payment by Results and Care Clusters contracts (mental health PbR). Mental Health PbR is nationally mandated and is required to be in place by 2013 for all mental health services who deliver services covered by the 21 care clusters. The care clusters categorise a range of adult and older peoples mental health needs. Our work with NHS North of Tyne involves writing service specifications for each of the 21 cluster groups, agreeing the costing methodology, identifying the relevant care packages for each cluster group and finally, collecting and analysing the data to ensure that the price set for each cluster is fair and accurate.
June 2012
We have been commissioned by NHS North of England to carry out a piece of work to confirm the existing commissioning arrangements for primary, secondary and tertiary mental health and learning disability services for adults. With 72 Clinical Commissioning Groups across the North of England it is essential that these new organisations have the information they need to take over the complex commissioning of mental health and learning disability services.

We have been commissioned by the Social Inclusion Programme within NHS North East and the Department of Health Social Care Team to provide a service user and carer leadership development programme within the North East. This follows previous successful leadership development programmes, delivered and developed in partnership with Tees, Esk and Wear Valleys NHS Trust and Northumberland, Tyne and Wear NHS Trust. The programme aims to increase capacity and capability amongst service users and carers to ensure they are able to actively participate in the development, commissioning and monitoring of services.
