October 2013 - VWALS Evaluation Report published

Earlier this year NEMHDU was commissioned to carry out a 12 month evaluation of the pilot Veterans' Wellbeing Assessment and Liaison Service (VWALS). The service was set up in 2012 as a partnership between Northumberland, Tyne & Wear (NTW) and Tees, Esk & Wear Valleys NHS Trusts, in collaboration with the national charities Combat Stress and the Royal British Legion. It aims to improve access to mental health services for ex-armed forces personnel and their families, by providing a single point of contact, assessment and rapid signposting into the most appropriate form of care.

Findings from the evaluation study, which involved a combination of methods including a client survey and qualitative interviews with clients, carers and other stakeholders, as well as the analysis of data collected by the programme and a literature review, can be found in the Evaluation Report. Overall the findings paint a positive picture of the emerging impact of VWALS on the wellbeing of local veterans and their families, while also providing some useful client recommendations and areas for future service development.
